The 6th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup is just around the corner. Mark your calendars now! Interested in volunteering, giving back to your community, and improving the natural environment here in San Diego? April is Earth Month and I Love A Clean San Diego is celebrating by hosting the 6th Annual Creek to Bay Cleanup, presented by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors through the support of Supervisor Pam Slater-Price and Supervisor Greg Cox. Take pride in your city by joining fellow volunteers on Saturday April 26th from 9am to 12noon as we comb beaches, bays, parks, canyons, and urban areas. The mission of the Creek to Bay Cleanup is to engage community members to remove debris from San Diego's waterways and open space areas. Half of the cleanup sites are coastal and half are inland, emphasizing the fact that almost 80% of marine debris originates inland. All of these areas are an integral part of San Diego's eleven watersheds, and every piece of litter is a potential piece of marine debris. Getting involved is easy! I Love A Clean San Diego hosts approximately 60 cleanup sites throughout San Diego County, each led by trained volunteer site captains. Cleanup sites range from Oceanside to San Ysidro, and Ocean Beach to El Cajon, making it easy to get involved no matter where you live! Last year, thousands of volunteers participated and cleaned up more trash and debris than ever before, removing a record-breaking 202,367 pounds from over 230 miles in San Diego County. The majority of trash collected in coastal areas consisted of cigarette butts, food wrappers, and beverage containers. However, debris removed from inland areas was larger and noteworthy items included car batteries, computer monitors, and tires. These impressive results showcase the significance of this cleanup and how volunteers like you are critical to keeping San Diego as clean and healthy as possible. Help I Love A Clean San Diego make 2008 the cleanest and greenest year to date by building upon last year's results and improving the health and beauty of San Diego as a whole. Give back to your community by getting outdoors and getting involved! Contact 1-800-237-BLUE for more information. |
